Dragon Trim is a soft hardwood native to China. The heartwood is light in color and the sapwood even lighter.
|
Color differential between the two is not distinct. The wood is without odor or taste and is mostly free from knots. Planed or sanded, it has the feel of spun silk.
Wood Structure
The demarcation between heartwood and sapwood is not clear and the wood is straight grained and lustrous.
Wood Properties
Dragon Trim is comparatively soft and light in weight for a hardwood. Physical weight is slightly less than kiln dried western red cedar. It is low in overall strength, but has a high strength to weight ratio. The shrinkage coefficient is smaller than most commercially harvested coniferous and broad leaf woods. The wood dries rapidly and does not easily warp, cup, end check, splinter or split. Movement in service is rated as small. Dragon Trim has one of the lowest thermal conductivity values of any wood; therefore the wood has very high insulation properties. Low thermal conductivity contributes to the low shrinkage in use. Compared to most woods, Dragon Trim has a high resistance to fire and flames and a higher ignition/flash point. Dragon Trim is naturally decay resistant and any rot is generally superficial. The wood is also naturally resistant to insect attack. Dragon Trim has no measurable pitch, resin or tannins so it is not subject to extractive bleeding.

Nieman Ponderosa Pine is often specified when appearance rather than strength is of primary importance
|
| Ponderosa Pine has a minimal amount of reddish-brown heartwood and an exceptionally wide sapwood which is honey-toned or straw-like in color. It has a straight, uniform grain which machines to a clear, smooth surface. When freshly sawn or surfaced, its pleasant smell is reminiscent of the forests where it grows.
Ponderosa Pine can be treated for above-ground or in-ground contact, and unlike some softwoods, it can be pressure treated for in-ground use without incising (perforating) the wood. The waterborne preservatives leave a clean, dry, odorless surface ready to be painted or stained. The treated product holds up well in storage, making it easy to yard for distributors and retailers, which in turn, makes it readily and widely available.

Lumber
 |
Spruce Lumber
|
|
Pound for pound, fiber for fiber, Spruce lumber has the highest weight to strength ratio making it an attractive solution for airplane building, boat construction and for interior and exterior construction work. Acoustic Properties
Spruce lumber is a relatively soft, light wood with a uniform texture and straight grain. Its composition is ideal for basic construction and specialized applications. Old growth Spruce has been found to possess exceptional acoustic properties and is used in the construction of pianos, guitars, violins and other musical instruments where acoustical properties are an integral part of engineering. Framing and Construction
Strait grain means strength and resiliency. Spruce lumber presents a straight grain that is largely attributed to slow and consistent growth patterns. As a result it is also used effectively for structural applications. Tight knit fibers give it the ability to stand up to the elements and present well as an outdoor siding or on decks and balconies. Airplane and Boat Building
Realizing the significance of a light wood possessing the kind of durability that Sprucewood does, innovative engineers successfully used it build airplane panels and fixtures in the production rush both before and during World War II. Its buoyant properties and lightness made it attractive to boat builders for constructing hulls, oars, ladders and other components. Today Spruce lumber is widely used in boat-building and hobby aircraft industries.

Furring Strips
|
|
Furring strips typically measure 1" x 2" or 1" x 3". They can be laid out perpendicular to studs or joists and nailed to them, or set vertically against an existing wall surface. The spacing between the strips depends on the type of finishing material. Wider spacing is typically used behind the heavy boards that support ceramic tiles. Closely spaced strips are needed for thin panelling or plaster. The use of strips with plaster, however, is called either lath and plaster or wattle and daub.
Furring is also used to support roof materials and may be seen under barn and shed roofs, but is often replaced in contemporary times by labor-saving plywood. Drywall has become the most common interior wall finishing material and doesn't need furring due to its strength. Furring is still used in remodeling work to fill out uneven sections for resurfacing, or to add room for insulation.

Plywood is an ideal material for concrete forming. It produces smooth concrete surfaces and can be used repeatedly - some overlaid panels up to 200 times or more. The thinner panels can be bent easily for curved forms and liners. Plywood's excellent stiffness minimizes deflection during pouring. Its natural insulating qualities help provide more consistent curing conditions. The large panel size and light weight reduce form construction and stripping time. And various surface textures are available for imparting attractive and unusual concrete textures.

Hardwood Plywood has several key advantages:
|
- Environmental Investment - It is a natural product made from a renewable resource. Therefore, it is one of the most environmentally friendly decorative products available to the consumer.
- Strength - Pound for pound, plywood is stronger than steel in static bending strength. What makes plywood so strong is its unique cross-layered structure. The adhesives used to bond the veneers in plywood are actually stronger than the wood itself.
- Efficiency - The plywood manufacturing process achieves a more complete utilization of the log than does lumber manufacturing. No sawdust results from either rotary cutting or slicing (the two most popular methods of cutting veneer). Greater square foot coverage, in comparison to solid wood products, is achieved by using veneer. Thus, plywood manufacturing makes better use of the high value woods prized by consumers today.
- Beauty - Architects and designers prefer the beauty of wood over any other material. The natural characteristics of wood make it attractive to the eye. Wood defies imitation. No material can match the infinite variety of natural markings and figure patterns offered through fine hardwood.
- Versatility - A great variety of products in various shapes and sizes can be manufactured from hardwood plywood. Chair backs and seats, domes, bowling alley channels, and pianos are just a few of the many various curved plywood products.
- Durability - In museums all over the world are ancient examples of plywood furniture and decorative veneers that have lasted hundreds of years.

Treated Lumber
|
|
All measures that are taken to ensure a long life of wood fall under the definition wood preservation (timber treatment). Apart from structural wood preservation measures, there are a number of different (chemical) preservatives and processes (also known as timber treatment or lumber treatment) that can extend the life of wood, timber, wood structures or engineered wood. These generally increase the durability and resistance from being destroyed by insects or fungus.
